Sports and activities

Da Nang punches above its weight for sports options, especially for a mid-sized city:

• Surfing: My Khe beach has surf schools and rentals. Best from September–February when waves pick up. Lessons from $15–25/session.
• Beach volleyball: Organised games on My Khe happen most evenings — just show up. Competitive leagues also exist.
• Football (soccer): Multiple expat leagues run year-round. Skill levels range from social to competitive.
• Running clubs: Hash House Harriers Da Nang runs weekly trails. Multiple other running groups active on Facebook.
• Gyms: An Thuong has several well-equipped gyms at $20–40/month. California Fitness and local chains are popular.
• Rock climbing: Marble Mountains and Son Tra offer guided climbing. Indoor climbing gyms have recently opened.
• Hiking: Son Tra Peninsula, Ba Na Hills and the surrounding mountains offer excellent trails. Group hikes are organised weekly.
• Yoga / fitness classes: Multiple studios in An Thuong. Drop-in classes from $5–10.

Food and social scenes

Vietnamese food

Da Nang's local food is excellent. Must-tries: Mì Quảng (turmeric noodle soup), Bánh Mì (baguette sandwiches), Bánh Xèo (sizzling pancakes), Bún Bò Huế (spicy beef noodle soup). A full local meal costs $1.50–3 at local restaurants and street stalls.

International food

An Thuong has a solid international restaurant scene — Italian, Mexican, Indian, Japanese, Israeli, American, French. Quality has improved significantly since 2022. Expect $8–20 per person at sit-down international restaurants.

Bars and nightlife

Da Nang's nightlife is social but relaxed compared to Bangkok or HCMC. An Thuong has a strip of expat bars — good for a Tuesday evening out, not wild enough for five-nights-a-week clubbing. Rooftop bars along the Han River are popular for sundowners.

Day trips and weekend escapes

• Hoi An — 30km south. The ancient town is a 30-minute motorbike ride. A weekend favourite.
• Hue — 100km north. Vietnam's imperial city, 1.5–2 hours by road or 45 minutes by train.
• Ba Na Hills — 40km west. French colonial hill station at 1,500m elevation. Worth the trip once.
• Phong Nha caves — 3–4 hours north. World-class cave systems and adventure activities.

What expat life in Da Nang is actually like

Honest summary: it's comfortable, social and easy. The city works. The people are friendly. The food is great. The beach is close. The community is there if you want it.

It's not the most culturally overwhelming or adventurous experience in Vietnam — if you want maximum immersion, a smaller town suits that better. But if you want a place to live properly, work effectively and build a real social life while enjoying Southeast Asia's lifestyle advantages, Da Nang is hard to beat.
